Description
Pale Stone and Blue Sky in Monet’s Rouen Cathedral
The cathedral’s carved facade fills this tall composition. The lower portal and the large arched opening above it contain blue-violet shadows. Cream and pale gold strokes cover the stone, with patches of blue sky along the upper edge and at the right.
This reproduction follows the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Rouen Cathedral: The Portal (Sunlight), accession 30.95.250. The original is oil on canvas, dated 1894, measuring 99.7 cm high and 65.7 cm wide. Monet worked on the cathedral group in 1892 and 1893, then finished the paintings in his studio at Giverny.
Hand-Painted Oil or Canvas Art Print
Our primary edition is painted by hand in oils by a studio artist. It has a physical paint surface, with natural handmade variation in the brushwork. The canvas art print reproduces the museum image in ink. In a print, the rough pale marks in the stone remain part of the picture.
Size and Presentation
The offered sizes keep the portrait proportions and include formats larger than the original. Choose rolled canvas, canvas mounted on a wooden stretcher, a thin frame or a thick frame. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. The lower doorway and the upper stonework stay within the composition at each offered size.
We send a photograph of the completed hand-painted oil order for your approval before dispatch. Both editions are made to order and ship free worldwide. Use the current size and presentation selectors to choose how the cathedral image will be supplied.
