Description
From his window above the Thames, Monet studied Waterloo Bridge through London’s smoke and haze, and this 1903 canvas catches it in a moment of sunlight breaking through. The bridge stretches across the river in a soft band, chimneys and industry smouldering beyond, while the water carries flecks of gold and blue. Part of his great London series, it is less a portrait of a bridge than of the luminous atmosphere that swallows and reveals it.
