Description

Three tall poplar trunks rise in a nearly straight vertical row through the middle of the canvas, their bark painted in warm strokes of salmon pink and ochre that catch direct sunlight, while a fourth trunk stands apart to the left, slightly shorter and set against a mass of yellow-green foliage. Above them a lively blue sky is broken by loose, wind-blown clouds in white and pale pink, and each trunk carries its own small crown of leaves rendered in dabs of blue-green and gold rather than a continuous canopy.

Below the trunks, a dense hedge of undergrowth in yellow and green fills the horizon line, and at the very bottom edge the poplars reappear a second time, reflected in a strip of water that runs the width of the canvas, their pink trunks repeating as pale vertical bars in the reflection. Monet painted poplars obsessively for a single stretch of a few years along a river he returned to again and again, working from the same spot at different times of day and season, and this canvas is one of the sunnier, more high-keyed entries in that group.

The composition is unusually decorative for a landscape: the trunks are spaced almost like the verticals of a screen or a piece of textile, more concerned with pattern and rhythm across the surface than with depth or recession, an interest that ties this series to flattened compositions rather than conventional perspective. Few of his landscapes rely this openly on repeated vertical elements to organise the whole picture.

On a wall, that rhythm of trunks reads clearly even from a distance, giving the painting a graphic, almost modern presence, while the warm pinks in the bark keep the overall effect sunny rather than austere, making it comfortable in a room that wants brightness without excess floral detail.

The craft

The oil edition of this Monet artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Poplars in the Sun a hand-painted oil painting or a print?

Both are offered. The primary edition of Poplars in the Sun is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed in real oils on artist-grade cotton canvas by a senior studio painter, so the brushwork and impasto are physically raised on the surface. A lower-priced archival canvas print of the same image is also available. You choose which on this page.

When did Claude Monet paint Poplars in the Sun?

Poplars in the Sun dates from 1891. Monet (1840 to 1926) was a founder of Impressionism, working outdoors to capture changing light, and the original is oil on canvas.

Where is the original Poplars in the Sun today?

The original is held by Matsukata Collection. Monet died in 1926, so the work is in the public domain; our reproduction is painted from a documented public-domain image of it, and every piece ships with a certificate of authenticity describing it as a reproduction. See the catalogue record for this painting.

What sizes can I order Poplars in the Sun in?

There are 8 sizes offered for this work, from 30 × 38 cm · 12 × 15 in up to 150 × 191 cm · 59 × 75 in. Each size keeps the original painting's proportions, so nothing is cropped or stretched, and the largest size offered is limited by the resolution of the source image.

How is Poplars in the Sun framed and delivered?

Choose rolled canvas, stretched on a wooden frame, or a thin or thick frame in your chosen finish. Every piece is made to order, hand inspected before it leaves the studio, and shipped free worldwide with a 30-day return guarantee.

Where does Poplars in the Sun look best in a room?

It belongs to our Grainstacks & Poplars collection. Works in this group suit a living room, bedroom, hallway or study, and Monet's light-filled palette sits especially well on a wall that gets natural daylight. Size it so the painting reads as the focal point of the wall rather than competing with the furniture below it.
