Description
In Poppy Field near Vétheuil in 1879, Monet is less interested in outline than in atmosphere, building the scene from broken touches of colour that resolve as you step back.
There is almost no black in the shadows. Monet built them from blues, violets and greens, which is why the picture keeps its luminosity even in its darkest passages.
The original is held by Foundation E G B Hrle Collection. Monet died in 1926, so the work is in the public domain, and our edition is painted from a documented public-domain image of it.
