The Hasso Plattner Collection is one of the most significant private collections of Impressionism assembled in modern times, and Claude Monet is its centre. It is shown permanently at Museum Barberini in Potsdam, which means a collection that could easily have stayed private is instead open to anyone who buys a ticket.
A collection with a single argument
Where many private collections spread across periods and names, this one narrowed. Rather than acquiring one representative canvas per artist, the collection went deep on French Impressionism and deepest of all on Monet, gathering enough works to show a painter thinking across years rather than posing for a single photograph. The German software entrepreneur behind it, Hasso Plattner, placed the works on permanent public display in Potsdam, where they anchor the museum’s Impressionist galleries. It is a rare case of a collection formed in private being opened, in full, on ordinary museum terms.
The Monets run through the motifs that defined him: the Seine and its reflections, the Normandy coast, snow and thaw, fields under changing weather, and the water garden at Giverny.
