Monet at Denver Art Museum

The Denver selection moves between the Normandy coast, the Seine, snowy Norway and London’s Waterloo Bridge. Its six Monet subjects include boats pulled onto a beach, a path through wheat and a pond covered with water lilies. The paintings differ in both setting and the way the water is drawn.

Normandy and Norway

In Path in the Wheat Fields at Pourville, a pale track descends between fields towards the sea. Red flowers dot the right-hand slope, and cliffs curve around the bay. The museum dates the painting to 1882 and identifies it among the works in the Frederic C. Hamilton Collection. That collection also includes The Houses in the Snow, Norway, dated 1895.

The Norwegian scene sets two brown buildings in a broad field of snow, with pink and blue strokes running across the white ground. Fishing Boats has a much busier foreground: orange and black hulls, raised masts and small figures stand along the shore below pale green water.

London haze and the lily pond

In Waterloo Bridge, Sunlight Effect, the arches and distant chimneys emerge through blue-violet haze. Denver’s record dates this oil on canvas to 1903. The 1904 Water-Lily Pond fills its nearly square surface with green pads, small flowers and dark reflections, without the bridge that appears in some other pond paintings.

6 Monet works from Denver Art Museum

The nearly square lily pond and the long view of Waterloo Bridge use space differently. The pond keeps attention close to the water's surface; the bridge stretches across a river with chimneys beyond it. Pourville adds a clear route from the wheat field down to the bay.

The museum's collection overview documents the original works. This grid is a selection of reproductions offered by our shop. Sizes and framing availability are shown separately for each painting.
