Monet at The Cleveland Museum of Art

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Monet collection includes a woman seen through glass doors, a flower still life, coastal views and a broad water-lily painting. The five subjects below give different ways to compare his use of figures, buildings and water, without treating them as one palette or one period.

From the red kerchief to the water-lily pond

The museum dates The Red Kerchief to around 1868–1873. Camille Monet stands outside in the snow, seen between pale curtains and the dark frame of glass doors. Her red covering interrupts the grey, white and green around it. The museum gives the unframed painting’s dimensions as 99 cm high by 79.8 cm wide.

Water Lilies (Agapanthus) has a very different format: the museum dates it to around 1915–1926 and lists 201.3 cm in height by 425.6 cm in width. Blue, green and violet passages spread across the pond, with small pale flowers and lily pads. The painted scene has no horizon separating water from sky.

What the other subjects add

In Gardener’s House at Antibes, branches cross the house’s pinkish roof and walls, with blue water beyond. Low Tide at Pourville, near Dieppe opens onto a wet shore beneath a pale cliff on the right; small figures stand near the water. Spring Flowers brings the view close to red and pale blooms against a dark background.

Cleveland’s conservation study identifies its water-lily canvas as the left panel of a triptych, with the other panels in St. Louis and Kansas City. X-rays revealed agapanthus plants that Monet later painted over. That earlier composition explains the painting’s title.

These subjects can be ordered as hand-painted oil reproductions on canvas. Canvas prints are offered separately. The product pages show the dimensions and framing options for the reproduction you are ordering, distinct from the museum dimensions above.

Compare the visible edges when choosing a subject. The glass doors divide the kerchief picture vertically; the shoreline runs across the Pourville scene; the water-lily subject extends across a much wider field of colour. The flowers and garden house offer closer views with overlapping stems and branches.

Select the oil-painting option for a new work painted by hand, or choose the canvas print. Check the proportions and available finishes on each product page. You can also browse the other Monet subjects to compare their compositions.
