Monet at Clark Art Institute

The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, opened in 1955. Sterling and Francine Clark’s collection formed the basis of the institute, which combines an art museum with research and academic activities. Its Monet holdings include coastal, inland and architectural subjects.

Bridges, cliffs and streets

In the references below, the bridge at Dolceacqua forms an arch above the water, while The Cliffs at Étretat combines a chalk arch, sea and small boats. Seascape, Storm gives more space to dark water and a sailboat. The street at Sainte-Adresse, the spring trees at Giverny and the rows of tulips introduce paths, houses and planted ground. The vertical Rouen Cathedral facade has a very different balance from these wider landscapes. The selection moves from built structures to exposed coast and cultivated ground.

The Clark’s collection history provides context for the founders’ collecting. Open a product page to see the particular reference and original dimensions. Hand-painted oil paintings are our main offer, and canvas prints are also available. Choose from that product’s actual size and presentation options, or browse the wider collection.

8 Monet works from Clark Art Institute

Start with the contrast between the chalk arch and the dark sea, or between the compact cathedral facade and the wider tulip fields. Check the original proportions and the offered reproduction sizes on the product page. A single size recommendation would miss the differences between these compositions.
