Description

The Bodmer Oak: Branches Above a Russet Forest Floor

The oak’s dark trunk stands to the right of centre, splitting into branches that reach across the upper canvas. Blue sky shows between the leaves. Pale trunks deeper in the forest provide narrow vertical lines beside the much broader oak.

Russet leaves cover the ground around its base. Patches of yellow and green foliage sit above this brown foreground. The Met connects the fallen leaves with Monet’s stay in Fontainebleau towards its end in October 1865.

The tree takes its name from the Swiss painter Karl Bodmer, who exhibited a view of it in 1850. Monet’s oil on canvas belongs to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The forest setting and the oak’s spreading shape distinguish this work from his later garden paintings.

The Hand-Painted Edition and the Print

A studio artist paints our principal edition in oil on canvas, following the oak, surrounding trunks and leaf-covered ground in the reference. A canvas art print is available as an alternative. Its brushmarks are part of the printed image rather than raised paint.

Choose a Landscape Size

All sizes preserve the landscape proportions. The original-size reference is not the largest reproduction offered. Start with the size selector, then choose a presentation available for that size and medium: rolled canvas, stretched canvas, or a thin or thick frame. The oak’s dark trunk and russet foreground give you specific colours to compare with your wall and furniture.

The craft

The oil edition of this Monet artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Bodmer Oak a hand-painted oil painting or a print?

The main edition is a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas, made to order by a studio artist. The canvas art print is the alternative, with the image reproduced in ink. Only the oil edition has newly painted brushwork.

When did Monet paint The Bodmer Oak?

The original dates from 1865. The Met notes the russet fallen leaves and relates the scene to the end of Monet's stay at Fontainebleau in October of that year.

Where is the original The Bodmer Oak, Fontainebleau Forest?

It is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. See the museum record for The Bodmer Oak.

What sizes can I order The Bodmer Oak in?

Larger reproductions are available beyond the original-size reference. Every size keeps the landscape proportions. The selector lists the dimensions for the chosen medium, and the available presentation options depend on that selection.

How is The Bodmer Oak framed and delivered?

You can order rolled canvas without a stretcher, canvas stretched on a wooden stretcher, or an available thin or thick frame. Each order is inspected before dispatch. Shipping is free worldwide, with a 30-day return guarantee.

Which colours should I consider when choosing a wall?

Look at the dark brown oak, russet leaf-covered ground and blue openings in the canopy. Compare a sample of your wall colour with those areas of the image, then check the width available for the landscape format.
