Monet at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston holds one of the largest and earliest-formed collections of Claude Monet in the United States. Boston collectors were buying his work in the 1880s and 1890s, when Monet was still a controversial name in his own country, and the museum’s holdings carry the confidence of that head start.

An American city that bought Monet first

Boston’s Impressionist collection grew out of private enthusiasm rather than institutional policy. Local collectors travelled, bought directly from dealers in Paris and Boston, and their pictures came to the museum through a long series of gifts and bequests across the twentieth century. Because the buying started so early, the MFA holds work from across Monet’s career rather than only the celebrated late garden pictures.

The best known painting is La Japonaise of 1876, a full-length portrait of Camille Monet in a red kimono that is as much about fashionable japonisme as it is about his wife. Around it sit Normandy coast scenes, snow-covered grainstacks from the 1890-91 series, canvases from the Rouen Cathedral campaign, views along the Seine and water lily paintings from Giverny. Together they trace the full arc from sharply observed daylight to something closer to pure colour. Each of the works below can be commissioned as a hand-painted oil reproduction or supplied as an archival print.

32 Monet works from Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

These paintings cover an unusually wide emotional range for a single museum: the theatrical red of La Japonaise at one end, the pale blue silence of a snowbound field at the other. That means the choice really is about your room. Snow and coast scenes bring calm and space, and suit bedrooms or any wall you want to feel wider. Warmer harvest and cathedral canvases carry a dining room or a room lit mainly in the evening. Larger sizes suit the looser late work; the earlier pictures reward being hung where you pass them daily. Browse the collection at your own pace.
