Framing Guide
Four Ways to Receive Your Monet
Every work on this site can be ordered in up to four presentations: Rolled, Stretched on chassis, Thin frame and Thick frame. The choice applies equally to a hand-painted oil reproduction and to an archival canvas print. Availability changes with the size you select, and the preview on the product page redraws to show the chosen frame around that painting before you add it to the cart.
Rolled
The canvas travels rolled in a protective tube, without a stretcher or an outer frame. It is the most compact presentation and the least expensive to ship. Choose it if you already work with a local framer, if you want a frame matched to an existing room, or if you are ordering one of the largest sizes. A rolled canvas has to be stretched by a professional before it can be hung, so allow for that cost and delay when you compare presentations.
Stretched on chassis
The canvas is tensioned over a wooden stretcher and arrives ready to hang, with no moulding around it. Monet’s palette carries well unframed: the pale blues and greens of the water-lily pond, the broken pinks and violets of a Giverny garden, the grey light of the Thames. Without a border the eye goes straight to the surface, which is where a hand-painted oil earns its price. This presentation also leaves open the option of adding a frame later.
Thin frame
A slim outer profile draws a crisp boundary around the stretched canvas without adding visual weight. Three finishes are offered: Gallery Black, Antique Gold and Soft Silver. Antique Gold is closest to the way Impressionist paintings are presented in museums. Gallery Black and Soft Silver sit more quietly in a contemporary room and suit a wall that already carries other work. The finishes appear directly beneath the presentation choices and are drawn around the actual painting, so you compare them on your Monet rather than on a swatch.
Thick frame
A wider, more architectural moulding gives the work greater presence and creates a deliberate transition between canvas and wall. Three finishes are offered: Museum Black, Dark Walnut and Gilded Wood. This is the presentation for a statement size, a traditional interior, or a single painting that has to anchor a wall on its own. Gilded Wood is the nearest to the heavy period frames used for Monet’s larger canvases in the nineteenth century.
A Simple Way to Decide
-
You already have a framer, or you want maximum flexibility: Rolled.
-
Ready to hang, with nothing around the image: Stretched on chassis.
-
A discreet, clean boundary: Thin frame.
-
Collector-style presence on a wall of its own: Thick frame.
Why a Presentation Is Sometimes Unavailable
At the largest dimensions a stretched or framed canvas exceeds what can be packed and carried safely, and the configurator marks that presentation unavailable at the selected size rather than accepting an order it cannot ship. Choosing a smaller size, or ordering the work rolled and having it stretched locally, restores the choice.
The image itself is never cropped, stretched or padded. Presentation changes only the physical finish, and every size preserves the proportions of the original painting. Read the Canvas Size Guide before committing to a very large dimension, and write to us if you would like a recommendation for a particular wall.
