Description

Painted during his 1884 stay on the Italian Riviera, this landscape looks across the valley of the Nervia toward the hills above Bordighera. The Mediterranean light floods the scene with warm colour, olive greens and sunbaked earth rising toward a luminous sky, a hilltop village glimpsed in the distance. Far from the cool tones of northern France, it shows Monet revelling in the intensity and clarity of the southern land.

Our version is hand-painted in oils to order by a trained studio artist, worked in layers on artist-grade cotton canvas to echo the warmth and clarity of the southern light. Select your size and framing on this page; each commission is made just for you and ships free worldwide.

The craft

The oil edition of this Monet artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Valley of the Nervia a hand-painted oil painting or a print?

Both are offered. The primary edition of The Valley of the Nervia is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed in real oils on artist-grade cotton canvas by a senior studio painter, so the brushwork and impasto are physically raised on the surface. A lower-priced archival canvas print of the same image is also available. You choose which on this page.

When did Claude Monet paint The Valley of the Nervia?

The Valley of the Nervia dates from 1884. Monet (1840 to 1926) was a founder of Impressionism, working outdoors to capture changing light, and the original is oil on canvas.

Where is the original The Valley of the Nervia today?

The original is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Monet died in 1926, so the work is in the public domain; our reproduction is painted from a documented public-domain image of it, and every piece ships with a certificate of authenticity describing it as a reproduction. What sizes can I order The Valley of the Nervia in?

There are 9 sizes offered for this work, from 30 × 37 cm · 12 × 15 in up to 66 × 81.3 cm · 26 × 32 in. Each size keeps the original painting's proportions, so nothing is cropped or stretched, and the largest size offered is limited by the resolution of the source image.

How is The Valley of the Nervia framed and delivered?

Choose rolled canvas, stretched on a wooden frame, or a thin or thick frame in your chosen finish. Every piece is made to order, hand inspected before it leaves the studio, and shipped free worldwide with a 30-day return guarantee.

Where does The Valley of the Nervia look best in a room?

It belongs to our The South & the Riviera collection. Works in this group suit a living room, bedroom, hallway or study, and Monet's light-filled palette sits especially well on a wall that gets natural daylight. Size it so the painting reads as the focal point of the wall rather than competing with the furniture below it.
